Five prostitutes work at Dreamland, in Tokyo's Yoshiwara district. As the Diet considers a ban on prostitution, the women's daily dramas play out. Each has dreams and motivations. Hanae is married, her husband unemployed; they have a young child. Yumeko, a widow, uses her earnings to raise and support her son, who's now old enough to work and care for her. The aging Yorie has a man who wants to marry her. Yasumi saves money diligently to pay her debt and get out; she also has a suitor who wants to marry her, but she has other plans for him. Mickey seems the most devil-may-care, until her father comes from Kobe to bring her news of her family and ask her to come home. Kenji Mizoguchi's last film.

The red light district of Yoshiwara in 1956 bears little resemblance to its evocative tradition as the place where flowery courtesans, romantic and proud gloried in years gone by. The government has waged an annual campaign to ban prostitution, but in the uncertainty and devastation of postwar Japan, it is a tragic and ignoble reality that women have turned to the streets for economic survival. At an establishment called Dreamland that proudly displays a euphemistic "Cafe and Tea Parlor Association" placard, the joyless lives and faded dreams of five women intersect. The widow, Yumeko (Aiko Mimasu), has entrusted her son to his grandparents in the province and is rarely able to visit him, ashamed of her disreputable profession. Yasumi (Ayako Wakao) is a resourceful, manipulative young woman who uses her influence on men for personal gain. Hanae (Michiko Kogure) is a mother burdened with the responsibility of supporting her family when her husband loses his job. Mickey (Machiko Kyo) is an unsentimental young woman whose extravagant lifestyle perpetuates her indebtedness to the proprietors of Dreamland. Yorie (Hiroko Machida) is a hopeless romantic who dreams of settling into a tranquil, domestic life, and fondly shows off her prized collection of kitchen tools to her coworkers. However, with the increasing momentum of the anti-prostitution bill, the women find their allegiances tested by economic necessity and personal conscience.

Kenji Mizoguchi creates an elegant, poignant, and unsentimental portrait of adversity and human resilience in Street of Shame. Using the recurrent imagery of rectangular compositions, Mizoguchi reflects the estrangement and social isolation of the tragic heroines: Yumeko borrows money from the calculating Yasumi through a slight opening in a privacy screen; Mickey's interview with the proprietor is shown through a wall opening; Yumeko avoids seeing her son and watches through structural beams as Hanae sends him away; the haunting image of Yumeko singing a melancholy ballad by the stairs. In the end, what emerges is a self-perpetuating, tragic cycle of exploitation and personal disappointment - a lonely and painful existence inexorably bound to the physical compromise of the body - a desperate struggle to retain a vestige of purity within the human soul.

La calle de la vergüenza. En un burdel de Tokyo llamado “El País de los sueños” varias prostitutas intentan escapar de su situación, en unos momentos difíciles para el local. Además, el Parlamento está debatiendo una ley para condenar la prostitución. A lo largo del film se explica la vida de diferentes prostitutas: de cómo las circunstancias les obligaron a vender su cuerpo, pero también de cómo intentan escapar de esta situación.

Notable film de Mizoguchi que nos muestra el periodo de indecisión moral y legislativa que pasó Japón en la posguerra. El barrio rojo nos muestra los distintos prostíbulos que allí cohabitaban y las distintas personalidades de las prostitutas que ejercían su labor en el citado barrio.

Película rica en matices y obra póstuma del gran maestro nipón. Los diferentes entresijos que rodean los sueños de las prostitutas y las distintas direcciones con que acometen las relaciones con sus clientes se siguen con interes. El problema al que se enfrentan cuando la edad avanza y las triquiñuelas de los préstamos y pagos hacen de "La calle de la vergüenza" un film vibrante.

La Rue de la honte. Le «Rêve», un bordel où travaillent cinq femmes. A la radio, on parle d'une possible fermeture des « maisons ». Les patrons sont inquiets et convainquent leurs pensionnaires que cela ne ferait qu'aggraver leur sort. Les prostituées, chacune à leur manière, poursuivent un rêve. Yumeko attend l'heure de la retraite. Elle espère vivre avec son fils, Shuichi, ouvrier d'usine. Yorie est fiancée à un campagnard. Hanae a un enfant en bas âge et se consacre à son avenir. Son mari, chômeur, est tuberculeux. Yasumi est entré au « Rêve » pour rembourser les dettes de son père. Arrive Mikki, une jolie fille de famille. Elle s'impose bientôt comme la vedette du « Rêve ». Sans vergogne, elle chipe les clients de ses collègues, trop heureux, dit l'un d'eux, « d'avoir du poisson frais ». Yorie, qui a rejoint son fiancé, revient très vite, épuisée par la misère et le surcroît de travail. Yumeko rencontre son fils dans une rue aux abords de son usine. Celui-ci lui exprime son dégoût. Il la jette violemment à terre et s'enfuit. Le mari de Hanae tente de se suicider. Le père de Mikki se présente au « Rêve ». Il vient de se remarier (son épouse est morte peu de temps auparavant). Il demande à sa fille de rentrer à la maison : il y va de sa réputation et de la bonne marche de ses affaires. La jeune fille doit également penser à son frère. D'abord consternée par l'annonce du décès de sa mère, puis révoltée par les arguments de son père, elle refuse d'obéir. Tout à coup, elle s'offre à lui, avant de le jeter dehors. Yasumi, qui n'a cessé d'abuser ses clients jusqu'à contraindre l'un d'entre eux au vol, achète le magasin d'un autre, conduit à la faillite. Le patron du bordel la présente comme un modèle. Yumeko devient folle. La fermeture des « maisons » n'est pas votée. En remplacement de Yumeko, Shizuko, une jeune bonne, se prépare pour son premier client…
